Review:
Joanna (Goldie Hawn), an insufferably rich socialite, isn’t just unlikable; she’s a queen bitch, and when she hires a carpenter to build a new closet for her enormous boat, in walks newbie Dean (Kurt Russell), who is starving for employment. He performs an excellent job over the course of a few days, but Joanna is dissatisfied and refuses to pay for his “error,” so she has Dean tossed overboard without recompense. Dean, who despises her guts, licks his wounds and is on the brink of starvation with his four boys to look after in their run-down house (his wife died three years ago and social services are on the verge of taking his kids away). After that, something unexpected occurs: Joanna slips overboard later that night and strikes her head, resulting in amnesia. When a barge picks her up and transports her to the mainland, she is admitted to a hospital, where the whole town is perplexed as to who she is. The local news puts her face on television with her unlikable snobbishness intact but no recollection of her past, but her own wealthy husband (played by Edward Herrmann) abandons her, believing himself fortunate to be free of her. When Dean sees her face on TV, he comes up with a terrible plan: he’ll pretend Joanna is his wife and prove it with some deception. When his scheme succeeds in fooling the authorities (and her, but only just), he takes her home and introduces her to his children as their new mother. Joanna is thrust into a difficult situation in which she must learn to be a modest mother, wife, and housewife while Dean works every day to make ends meet. And, after a few months, she proves to be an excellent mother and wife! What should have been a wonderful opportunity for Dean to take advantage of an unpleasant deceit turns out to be a fantastic method for him to get even with the lady who wronged him, but his plan of vengeance ends up turning into an unexpected romance for both of them as they fall in love. When Joanna’s husband calls, Dean is just a little late, realizing he should confess while he still has the chance.
Despite being a dangerously sexist fantasy, Overboard is a sweet-hearted comedy with some genuine chuckles that was a TV mainstay in the late 1980s and into the 1990s. If it hadn’t been written so beautifully, this might have easily devolved into exploitation, and Hawn and Russell are clearly a great fit for this material. They have a contagious chemistry, and director Garry Marshall (Pretty Woman, another strange sexist romantic comedy) does an admirable job of blending all the unpleasant elements into a delectable feast. The music was composed by Alan Silvestri.
Overboard has recently been released on Blu-ray by Severin, a boutique label dedicated to distributing exploitation and horror films on Blu-ray in a freshly scanned 2K transfer. This is an unusual choice for Severin, but it’s a pleasant release, and the picture looks and sounds better than it has in the past. A fresh interview with the screenwriter, as well as the trailer, are included as bonus materials.
