Balrog is a fictional character from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-Earth legendarium, appearing in the works The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, as well as their sequel trilogy, The Silmarillion. He is also known as Durin’s Bane or simply Durin.

The Balrogs and the dragons were both in Sauron’s service, which meant they were friends, while being fierce competitors for the title of most dreaded “race” in Middle-earth.

The Balrogs were enormously strong beings. To hunt down the feared, a huge spider-like creature strong enough to consume the fruits of Telperion, which produced light for billions of stars, just seven Balrogs were required.
Durin’s Bane, as previously stated, single-handedly drove the mining dwarves of Moria out of their well defended former nation-state, which at the time was the world’s biggest dwarf kingdom.
He also battled with Gandalf and, while dying, shattered the side of a mountain with just his physical might.
The demise of the Balrogs was sometimes dubbed the “firestorm” because of their physical agility. Fanor, an elf strong enough to control the light on both trees, was vanquished by Gothmog.
He also caused devastation on Gondolin, which was teeming with Elves of the same quality, although much weaker. At one point, he was believed to be at least partly similar to Sauron.
Smaug was a huge and strong adult dragon with physical strength that let him to shatter stones easily, as demonstrated by his assault on the Lonely Mountain. It could fly and breathe jets of blazing flames and vapors from its mouth and nose thanks to its enormous wings.
His whole body was infused with fire as he shone in the darkness of Lonely Mountain’s depths, and his normal methods were “smoothed and stripped” (i.e., melted down) by its passage, according to certain remarks in The Hobbit.
Smaug’s enormous visage, like that of many Middle-earth dragons, concealed his keen senses and a frighteningly smart intellect. After Bilbo made his first visit to his hiding spot, he instantly documented the theft of a single cup since he had an encyclopedic knowledge of his wealth.
When the hobbit returned a second time, Smaug was there waiting for him, pretending to be sleeping, and declaring that he could smell the thief even if he couldn’t see him.
Smaug exploited the ensuing discussion to create concerns in Bilbo’s mind, correctly suspecting that “the invader was interacting with the dwarves and men of Laketown and if Bilbo had ever considered the logistical problems of transporting his portion of Smaug’s treasure home.”
Smaug is nimble and fast, and despite his size, he can effortlessly leap over obstacles and dive at high speeds with minimal effort. Smaug’s crimson and golden scales rendered him impenetrable to nearly any weapon on the defensive, but his lower abdomen was fragile and susceptible.
Smaug made amends by sleeping on the Lonely Mountain riches and having gold coins and jewels implanted in his flesh.
When Bilbo Baggins faced the dragon in his hiding place, he found a naked stain on the left side of his chest, which was supposed to hide his sole physical weakness.
This knowledge came from an old thrush who overheard Bilbo connect it with the dwarves, allowing Bard to kill Smaug by firing his black arrow into the bare place.
Who Would Win in a Battle Between Balrogs and Dragons?
According to our findings, both the Balrogs and the dragons are very strong creatures, ranking among the most powerful in Middle-earth.
During their reign of terror in Middle-earth, the Balrogs and dragons scored amazing triumphs, destroying creatures, armies, and even whole kingdoms, as you may have read. Another connection between these two tribes is that they both depend extensively on fire. So, are they both equally potent? Well, not quite.
The Balrogs are Maiar, who are divine beings that have been corrupted by Morgoth, giving them even more power. They became shells of their previous selves as a result of the corruption, but it enhanced their abilities and granted them additional ones that they didn’t have as normal Maiar.
Gothmog, the most powerful of the Balrogs, was likened to an early Sauron, whereas Durin’s Bane was able to send an entire dwarf nation, and the biggest one at that, away, as we have seen. It was also an incredible accomplishment that many Balrogs were able to slay the gigantic Ungoliant.
Durin’s Bane was able to demolish a chunk of a mountain just by landing on it, demonstrating their destructive abilities. As far as we know, the Balrogs had no weak spots, and although they could be killed, it required a lot of force to do it.
After more than ten days of pursuing and battling, Gandalf was able to slay Durin’s Bane, and we all know how strong Gandalf was.
The dragons’ abilities differed depending on which dragon they were. The huge dragons, who were also the largest, were very strong and destructive, while the lesser dragons posed little threat. Flying dragons posed an even bigger danger, since they were capable of wiping out armies and even whole towns.
Dragons were also highly clever and informed – perhaps more so than the Balrogs – and although they had the upper hand in this area, they had a weak point on their underbelly that could be readily exploited.
This is why we believe the Balrogs are much more powerful than dragons. Given how strong the Balrogs were, the dragons had a vulnerability that any Balrog might readily exploit. In addition, Balrogs are heavenly beings that depend on magic, while dragons were created to be war engines in Morgoth’s service.
Even though Smaug is an experienced representative of the great dragons, we still believe Durin’s Bane would have been able to expose Smaug’s vulnerability (we mean, Bard was able to, and he would be crushed to pieces by Durin’s Bane) and kill the dragon.
